Youth Sustaining Peace

A Workshop Series for Youth ages 12-18 to learn about Sustainability and Leading Change in their Community

Youth Sustaining Peace is a 6-day workshop series that educates and empowers young people to speak up about environmental sustainability. This free program aims to uplift youth as leaders in creating more sustainable communities.

Youth receive stipends, certificates, & sustainable swag for completing the program. Select applicants receive additional media training while working on a short video documenting the workshop series. Youth Sustaining Peace is a collaboration between Oakland Peace Center and Resilience Birthright with support from the Northern California Recycling Association.

Program Overview

WHO:
Youth (ages 12-18) in Alameda County who are interested in sustainability and community advocacy/leadership

WHEN:
Youth Sustaining Peace takes place across 6 afternoon sessions on Saturdays in June/July. Each session was from 10am to 2pm with a break for lunch.

WHAT:
Youth Sustaining Peace aims to uplift youth as leaders in creating more sustainable communities. This program is a mix of class lecture, discussion, and hands-on activities including:

  • Intro to Zero Waste, Reusables & Litter Prevention

  • Composting & Food Systems

  • Clean Energy

  • Community Action & Outreach

  • Communications for Change

  • Youth Presentations, Awards, & Celebration

WHERE:
Oakland Peace Center, 111 Fairmount Ave., Oakland, CA 94611
Nearby excursions include: neighborhood litter-pick-up and analysis, the garden at OPC, field trip to Rock the Bike, & door-to-door outreach near OPC

WHY:
To support a more peaceful future where all have access to clean air, water, and healthy foods, youth must be empowered to lead change in creating more sustainable systems in our communities.

Participants will receive stipends, certificates, & sustainable swag for completing the program. Some participants will receive additional media training to produce a short documentary film. There is no cost to participate.
