Building Space for Peace
Oakland Peace Center (OPC) is officially the new owner of 111 Fairmount! We have acquired the building and property from the First Christian Church of Oakland, which will continue to be a close partner in our network of peacebuilders. We are collaborating with The Unity Council to develop 100% affordable housing on-site. In a world where it is illegal to be unhoused, having a safe place to call home is essential to peace. OPC is eager to hold space for peace in a new way.
Housing production has slowed in Oakland. Oaklandside reported that 2023 had fewer house building permits issued than any single year since 2015. The Urban Institute has reported that, “people of color, especially women of color, and single-parent headed households were at the highest risk for eviction”. By adding to the affordable housing stock, OPC is easing the economic barriers faced by BIPOC families as market rates for housing increase. Creating safe, affordable housing is a crucial step in undoing many years of racist urban planning practices and divestment, which have had generational ripples.
Beginning in spring 2025, The Unity Council and OPC will host community meetings for feedback on this housing development.
